High protein diet and exercise helps maintain muscle mass during weight loss

Two groups of women exercised for four months while eating a controlled 1700 calorie per day diet. One group was eating a diet high in proteins (beef and dairy) and low in carbohydrates while the other was lower in protein and high in carbohydrates (rice and pasta).

Both groups lost about the same amount of weight. The high protein group lost primarily fat weight while the low protein gruop lost about one-third of the weight as muscle mass.
