“Pole dancing” aerobics combines the sensual aspects of erotic dance with a combination strength training and aerobic workout. The popularity of pole dancing as a form of exercise has grown over the past two years as studios around the world begin to offer classes to women (and occasionally men) who are interested in adding something new to their weekly workouts.
Pole Dancing Exercises
Part of the appeal as an exercise is that pole dancing requires muscular coordination and endurance and is often a change of pace to a regular workout routine. Standard pole dancing exercises include climbs, spins, and inversions. Pole dancing aerobics is typically set to music in a classroom setting though it is possible to purchase a pole and various instructional books and DVDs for home use.
Pole Dancing Origins
Pole dancing as an exercise fad is thought to have begun in Los Angeles and has since moved around the world. It was first popularized by actress Sheila Kelley after her role in “Dancing at the Blue Iguana.†A variety of A-list celebrities including Teri Hatcher, Kate Moss, and Angelina Jolie. Pole dancing has also been featured on the Oprah Winfrey show.
Poles - permanent and temporary
The standard pole used for pole dancing is 2 inches in diameter, allowing it to be comfortably grasped with one hand. Pole dancing poles are generally made of copper, brass or steel and attached to both the floor and ceiling.
While most poles are permanently affixed in place, it is possible to purchase poles that are attached to a base and sturdy enough to not require ceiling supports. These poles allow for the same range of movements and exercises as those permanently attached.
One can also find poles that operate in the same manner as most shower rods. Place one end of the pole to the floor and then extend the far end until it is snug against the ceiling and lock in place. These styles of pole are not sturdy enough for exercise and are meant for erotic dance.
Other equipment for pole dancing
Additional equipment for pole dancing is similar to other forms of exercise. A good pair of athletic shoes and socks, and comfortable lightweight fitness clothing is all that is required. Some classes allow their members to wear high-heeled shoes, but because of the discomfort and injury risk this is not typically recommended.
